Robin von Holdt reviews the 2022 challenge

General

''Well in time for summer and Christmas enjoyment, local wine lovers are in for delicious drinking treats! The list of top quality budget conscious wines identified below offers perfect treats for all. Crisp fresh whites, fruity reds with good structure, bubblies to celebrate, lip-smacking rosés and some delicious sweet wines too. Winning wines were judged to offer gorgeous flavours for immediate enjoyment, without breaking the budget.

Strong support from producers and family vineyards endorses industry enthusiasm for this key price-category. Wine lovers remain committed to enjoying their lifestyles and making the most of life, notwithstanding tough times. Affordability of course remains key. The Ultra Value Challenge supports the wine loving community and the wineries who have committed to attractive pricing without compromise on delivering top quality. The UVC does so in a practical fashion, identifying top value wines according to a specific combination of wine quality and bottle price.

If the price is right, then it’s really just about top quality. Delicious, value-for-money winners. Wine lovers and wineries come together in a happy, positive, winning relationship.

Our grateful thanks go to our loyal supporters as well as to first time entrants Our congratulations go to all of the producers of these fine winning wines, who put so much effort into making these delicious wines at great prices. Well done!’

Quality

'Panel judges felt that a repeat of incremental improvements in quality were achieved in 2022. Improvements from vineyard to cellar management saw wines that are easy to enjoy. Ripe fruit, fresher styles and less wood make for friendly styles. Judges found it a pleasing experience, seeking out the better wines in each flight. Yet, once again, a number of wines simply did not pass the quality threshold’.

Judging

’'Every wine was again assessed by the very experienced judges with due diligence and care. Judging panels again took responsibility for even-handed reviews, looking for positives while maintaining the expected rigour. Wines were all tasted ‘blind’ and in similar flights. The great set of results made public for the first time today, represents the judges commitment to finding wine lovers the best value, high quality wines, possible.

Very good wines were identified. A healthy percentage of wines gained recognition and won an award in 2022. You will find these wines terrifically enjoyable and many are really unmissable. The initial hurdle to find top quality was applied diligently and consistently. A number of wines did not pass this test. This is always the case. Thereafter, the algorithm that takes price into account, in order to arrive at the value-adjusted final result, saw another layer of wines fall aside.

Victories are truly deserved and they are special. Wineries and their teams can be justifiably proud of their winning achievements. Awards were confirmed by the independent review of the definitive 2022 results."

Sauvignon Blanc comment: Always a strong flight and this year is no exception. A good spread of styles from tropical to herbal and everything in-between. That made them appeal to all sorts of palates.

Pinotage comment: A number of pleasant, easy-drinking Pinotage’s but only a few displaying the complexity of fruit/tannin balance, to stand out.

Merlot comment: A most enjoyable flight. Not overly green or over-extracted. Lovely typicity & expression of red/black berry fruit and some wines with good support & structure. A great line-up of wines for everyday enjoyment.

Other White Blends comment: A few Sauvignon/Semillon blends showed really well! Great balance of ripe yellow fruit & fresh acidity, so palatable & food friendly.

Statistics

Judging standards are always applied that are comparable, or tougher, to those applied at top International levels. This means that around 50% of entered wines achieved an award. The prestige of each winning wine is well respected. Without question, a great set of results has again been achieved. Rigorous judging of all wines entered saw 8% of wines gain Double Gold Medal awards. 21% of wines gained Gold Medal awards. Silver Medal awards were strictly judged too, with just 17% scooping up an award. As always, awards were well earned, well deserved, not simply handed out.

Double Gold Awards went to a small number of wines totalling just 29. 12 red wines (down from 16 in 2021), 14 white wines, 1 semi sweet, a single rosé and 1 MCC cracked the all-important nod. Scores achieved were all 91/100 or higher with the highest score this year again achieving a remarkable 97/100.

Red wines: Unusual red blends (thus not Rhone Blends) lead the charge with a total of 4 wins. Merlot achieved 3 wins while Cabernet Sauvignon gained 2 awards. A single Bordeaux Blend, Pinotage and Shiraz each managed victory.

White wines: Chenin Blanc again led the field, scoring a total of 6 awards (the same as in 2021). Sauvignon Blanc also matched its 2021 performance with a credible 4 awards. Chardonnay achieved a solid 2 victories. A single Chenin Colombard blend, a Viognier plus a semi sweet gained recognition too.

A single MCC and a single rosé won Double Gold Awards.

Gold Awards went to only 72 wines. Red wines achieved 30 positions while white wines gained 28 wins. Rosé wines achieved 8 awards while MCC, natural sweet and semi-sweet achieved 2 awards each. This Gold Award category winning wines achieved a score of between 85 and 90/100 once again, consistent with the last 3 years.

Red wines: These enjoyed a different set of results than might usually be predicted. The category ‘other red blends’ (non – Rhone style) lead the pack with 8 wins. Shiraz came in with 6 wins followed by Cabernet and Merlot both earning a credible 4 wins each. Pinotage gained 3 awards as did Bordeaux Blends.

White wines: Chenin trumped the category this year with 13 victories as was the case in 2021. Sauvignon managed to achieve 6 awards followed by Chardonnay with 4 awards and Colombard with 3 wins.

Silver Awards were credited to just 59 participating wines. 26 awards went to red wines. 20 awards went to white wines. Rosé wines achieved 6 awards, while MCC, Natural Sweet and Fortified achieved 2 awards each. Semi Sweet category achieved a single win.

Red wines: Bordeaux Blends and Pinotage led with 6 victories each. Cabernet and Other Red Blends each gained 5 awards while Merlot and Shiraz each achieved 2 wins.
White wines: Sauvignon Blanc stampeded into victory with a total of 13 wins. Chardonnay gained 3 awards while Chenin went on to gain the final 3 awards.

Overall, the award allocation was as follows for the 2022 Ultra Value Wine Challenge:

Red wines gained 68 awards. White wines gained 62 awards. Rosé wines achieved 15 medals. MCC achieved awarded 5 medals. Natural Sweet and Semi Sweet wine categories won 4 awards each. Fortified wines managed to win 2 awards.

Major award winners won by cultivar:

Red Wines: Other red Blends 17 awards. Cabernet Sauvignon 11 wins. Bordeaux Blends and Pinotage 10 wins each. Merlot and Shiraz 9 wins each.

White wines: Sauvignon Blanc managed to just gain the top slot with 23 awards. Chenin Blanc achieved 22 awards. Chardonnay gained 10 awards.

Vintages

Wines from vintages 2018 to 2022 were winners in this year’s competition. The majority of these were from 2022 (76). 2021 had 50 winners. 2020 had 20 winners. No 2019 vintage wines gained an award, while 2018 had a single red wine winner. Non-Vintage wines accounted for 21 winning wines.

With regards to results by vintage for Double Gold winners: 2022 cracked the winning number of 14 top awards. This was followed by 2021 with 7 wins. Vintage 2020 gained 4 wins while non-vintage winners numbered 4 wins as well.

Cabernet Sauvignon comment: A mixed bag – some more serious than others and a few a bit light on fruit & showing dryness & slightly dominant tannins. Some shone however with their varietal typicity & fuller-bodied presence.

MCC & Sparkling comment: A consumer-friendly category involving wines with Muscat aromas, rose petal / potpourri, grapey, litchi appeal & sweetness on palate once. Girly and playful and not pretending to be serious. Great poolside, garden party, picnic quaffers.

Other Red Blends comment: Some fantastic wines with depth, complexity, dark fruit and the tannic support needed but still remaining very approachable now. A couple were over extracted or green and with too generous a use of oak staves. In the main, job so well done.

Other Red Cultivars comment: A small flight with a few good examples of soft, fresh, easy-drinking but well balanced tannins & integrated acidity.

Other White Cultivars comment: A delightful viognier – very varietal typical: Loads of peaches & apricots, delicious tangy acidity. Not too weighty at all. Colombard’s were also a real treat and will & should be enjoyed by consumers as an everyday drink by the pool or wherever. Fun & playful with juicy fruit.

Rosé comment: Mixed bag. NV Rose was oxidised somewhat. But otherwise a nice flight of clean and crisp, purity of fruit & exactly what one expects & wants from Rose (in a dry style). Good texture and presence in most.

Semi-Sweet / Off-Dry comment: A category that generally delivers uncomplicated, yet characterful wines. The best had a more personality, vibrancy and balance.

Chenin Blanc comment: Nice spread of quality from the slightly oxidised NV wines! To the more textured wines depth, tactile expression, integrated but bright acidity & tropical fruit with pineapple tang & freshness. A couple were bland & “safe”. Missed some more “daring” use of gentle oak & playfulness. A lot of mid-range, most pleasant wines, so well done.

Shiraz comment: Less outstanding wines than is often the case. A number showed smudged issues, yet the average was good with some having complexity.

Chardonnay comment: Whilst unwooded Chardonnays can be a little neutral in fruit, the use of lees etc. gave complexity to the better wines with subtle fruit in the background.

Fortified comment: A commendable flight that usually shows a few jewels.

Bordeaux Blend Red comment: Classical styles that are accessible came through good quality of ripe fruit. Integrated tannins on the best wines meant they slipped down smoothly without blunting the finish.

Ultra Value Challenge celebrates the special awards

Vineyard consistency awards

A characteristic that underpins, globally, all great vineyards and their high-quality wines, is the consistent achievement of benchmark accolades. This categorical fact, one proven only with time, has meant that the UVC Challenge now also assesses and awards top ranking vineyards. They have to have proved to be top-ranked, throughout the 8 years of this value-wine competitions history. At this stage over the full eight year period, there are now five vineyards in leading positions with between 59 and 90 winning wines. This is a brilliant performance! A remarkable endorsement of each winners vineyards, their cellar teams, as well as their wine making skills and abilities.

Incredibly, to totally and utterly endorse the meaning and status of consistency, all of these winning producers retain their identical place, to last year! We are thrilled to congratulate the following winners.

Nicholson Smith Agencies - First place
Alvi's Drift Private Cellar - Second place
Accolade Wines SA - Third place
Robertson Winery - Fourth place
Koelenhof Wynkelder - Fifth place

Wine of the Year Award: a Red, White, Sweet & Cap Classique/Sparkling wine

We added this category to our Special awards. It is entirely correct that the professional judges are able to identify during the evaluation process those four individual wines that stand apart from every other wine. One white wine, one red wine, one sweet wine & one MCC only. These four wines that each achieve the single highest judged score during the competition. We are pleased to congratulate -

Red wine of the year: Koelenhof Wynkelder Koelenhof Koelenberg 2021

White wine of the year: Van Loveren Tangled Tree Butterscotch Chardonnay 2021

Sparkling wine of the year: De Krans Premium Moscato Perlé 2022

Sweet wine of the year: Nicholson Smith Agencies Pandora's Box La Dolce Vita Moscato NV

The additional level of recognition and endorsement that these unique achievements bring to vineyards, as well as to their wine making teams, is of tangible brand and commercial value and benefit. Each one of these awards offers a further enhancement of credibility and reputation, providing positive local market impact together with an enhanced global awareness and brand footprint. It also provides for differentiation of and recognition for their brands uniqueness and USP’s.

The diversity of South African terroir excites me! We are blessed with different soils and climates in a relatively small wine growing area in the Western Cape, resulting in a unique diversity of wine styles and quality. South Africa makes amazing wines."

The Diemersfontein Sauvignon Blanc is a favourite amongst our customers. Receiving an award for this best-selling white wine of ours is awesome news. We felt that this one was exceptional for us this year lot of fruit on the nose, aromatic with undertones off green pepper characteristics and lingering aftertaste. On both wines this year receiving awards we would like to thank everybody involved from the vineyard worker to the cellar worker for making this happen and creating these great wines."
