Set in the heart of the West Coast – famous for its springtime display of wild flowers, Darling Cellars is situated on the R315 between Malmesbury and Darling.

Recently a few new wines and vintages were released of which the Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc 2016 needs a special introduction! Darling Cellars Old Bush Vine Range comes from specific old bush vines which are selected for their uniqueness in prominent terroir flavours. In this case the vines are 38-39 years old with no irrigation.

Made from two vineyards, one on deep Hutton soils with koffieklip, the other from well drained weathered granite soil, this Chenin Blanc displays a lovely light straw hue in the glass, and a mineral freshness on the nose. This is a complex wine, with undertones of orange peel and yellow peach, and a long lingering finish. Only free run juice was used and barrel maturation happened in French oak for 10 months. The oak is subtle and well integrated with the fruit.

Following in the footsteps of the 2015 vintage that received a double gold at Veritas, the Premium Sauvignon Blanc 2016 was released recently. South western facing slopes on deep granite soils are the preferred site for these bush vines with no irrigation, to produce the grapes used for this special wine.

Fermentation took place at a 13˚ Celsius. The wine received skin contact for 12 hours and was left on the fine lees for 6 months to add complexity and depth. Not made in a full ripe style, the 2016 vintage offers tropical flavours of pineapple, watermelon and green undertones of asparagus. A medium bodied wine with an aging potential of 2-3 years.

Lady Ann Darling 2016 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. The diversity of Darling Cellars as well as the Darling region is clearly noticed in this wine. Barrel fermented in new 500lt French oak barrels and matured on fine lees for 8 months, this wine has layers of fruit complexity supported by integrated wood. Typical aromas are green characters of green fig, with tropical arrays of white pears and pineapple. The palate is elegant with a lovely minerality to the finish. The wine will age well within the next 3 - 5 years.

These wines are available at the Cellar Door and a few distinguished wine outlets.
