“Our wines are a testament to the
quality the vineyards
of our region deliver year after
year,” says proud Darling Cellars chief winemaker Pieter- Niel Rossouw. “The
medals at Veritas follow the outstanding success they achieved earlier this
year at the Swartland and National Young Wine Shows.”
Only a very small number of wines entered
for Veritas are selected for Double Gold medals. Of 1 763 entries this
year, 57 wines – or 3,2% - achieved this highest level in the competition. In
addition, only seven Sauvignon
Blanc wines received Double
Gold medals, which speaks volumes for Darling Cellars.
Organised by the SA National Wine Show
Association, Veritas celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and
is one of South Africa’s oldest and most recognised wine competitions. Entries
are tasted blind by panels of winemakers, researchers, academics and merchants.
In addition to the Double Gold medal,
Darling Cellars received eight bronze medals at Veritas too – meaning that
every wine it entered won
a medal.
The Darling Cellars Premium Sauvignon Blanc
2015 was produced from bush vines growing in deep granite soils and which
receive no irrigation. The result is a wine with intense aromas of green
pepper, flint, asparagus and minerality, which flows onto the palate and
lingers. Ideal companions to this wine are seafood, salads and creamy chicken
dishes.
“This outstanding performance at Veritas
has only been possible with the passion and dedication of people like our white
winemaker Maggie Venter and an entire team of people who work tirelessly,” says
Rossouw.
The strength of particularly Darling
Cellars’ white wines was showcased when a Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend
won the title of Grand Champion at the Swartland and then, at the National
Young Wine Show, went on to take South African White Blend Champion for 2015.
Amongst its other achievements, Darling Cellars also received a Silver medal at
the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirit Awards for its Chocoholic
Pinotage 2014.
Darling Cellars produces a number of wine
ranges – available countrywide - including the Darling Cellars Premium, Darling
Cellars Reserve, Chocoholic and the newly released Cinful.
