Great Old Vines tasting at Volkskombuis

published on: Wednesday, 14 August 2019

The Old Vines Project is going from strength to strength, and judging by the buzz at the tasting held on Tuesday 13 August at the Volkskombuis, there is no stopping this train.

If your vineyards are older than 35 years old, then I urge you to register with the project as there are plenty of marketing opportunities and I think the project is going a long way to assisting the prices of wines in South Africa to be raised.

There were some wines at about R170/bottle but predominantly the wines at the tasting were very small batch production from low yielding, and rightfully charging a good price for their wines.  Be prepared for some awesome fulsome wines, often Chenin and Cinsaut but also discovered a Gamay Noir - apparently the oldest in the country, made by Alexander Grier from Villiera.

There were a few Pinotages, some Syrah and a few others too.  The Kaapzicht 1947 Chenin really stood out for me!
